Double Standards and favouritism

So, after that big rant that I had, it is now the next day. I had my Internet access removed, so what, it wasn’t mine to begin with because your process is so inefficient that it ended up not getting done. When I was in the chat with my supervisor, he said that I was not being singled out because I was a co-op student, and that anyone else caught was to have theirs removed as well, and he included himself in the equation. So, when I see our manager come strolling by, I minimize (even though I have it setup that they would not be able to tell anyways) my entire Internet like activities, and wait until she leaves. Now, I know our little she male in the back corner pretty much gets away with anything, and I have seen her on the Internet at inappropriate times as well, so I decided to take a peek see for myself while she was over there. To my non-surprise, Hitler is standing over her, while she is simultaneously watching a youtube flick, playing a game on freewebgames, and on msn and facebook, all with her watching her and talking to her. So, needless to say I am waiting for her access to be taken away, or for some shrieking to occur, nothing, they chat, Hitler leaves, and all is still well in the world of erratic dictators.

Wow… Are you kidding me, so much for that “not being singled out” part of his story. I can clearly see how it goes. “Awe my back hurts” ok here is an ergonomics specialist to help you with a new keyboard mouse monitor chair desk attachment and pedestal, “Awe I am sore” ok go home. She is now the assistant to our Systems Admin, pretty much the Jr. Systems Admin, and she is as dumb as a doorknob, but why is she still here? Why does she get away with what she does? Ohhhh that’s right, she doesn’t fight back, she sits back and agrees to everything, the only thing with her agreeing and my agreeing is that she complains about everything she has to do because, “I’m tired” or “Why me” when she is not doing anything, general whining.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is, I hate this she male, and no one here can understand why she is in the position where she is. Take my word on it though, measures are in place, they are definitely in place.

There is a question in the IT world that some seem to know the answer to, and some think they know the answer to. That question is a fairly simple one to answer if you are well educated, I for one am not (even though I’d like to think I know things), but I still know the answer, and my god I hate it. If you are going to hire somebody to manage an IT team, do you want someone that knows a lot of HR and little IT, or someone that knows IT and not much HR. Clearly, in the eyes of a company, you want someone that has some sort of degree/diploma in HR (well why not? The ones that run the job are, after all, mostly all HR people) as they have the people skills, and business concepts that will allow for a smoothly operated team if individuals. Or at least that is what is supposed to happen. I am a Co-op student that has come out of the brilliant college that is Sheridan College, college it may be, but inadequate at providing an excellent, above standard education it is not. I have been learning concepts and skills that I only now realize are actually worth something to be making an impact in a career, and in the size of your bank account. Some people may think I am young, and would not know much about the IT world and it’s inner workings, but I can gauge a situation and a process well, and can understand things faster than some of the people “in the know” or so they have been called in my brief stint so far in the business world.

Now I can understand the need for a people person in a position of power that would have to go out and talk to people, for obvious reasons, but I also see the big need for that person to actually understand the inner workings of IT, which my IT manager does not seem to have. My supervisor, who is a great people person, and has an incredible mind for IT and fixes / setups / processes, only problem is, he can’t do anything, as he is always overruled by the Hitler that is our Manager. Funny thing is, after his suggested plan of attack is heard, she will request a different plan, that eventually does not work, who would have guessed. That is just one of the many things wrong with this situation, and another thing we cannot do a single thing about as no one else knows a bit of what to do when we try and go over her.

Now you may be asking yourself, Andrew, what made you go off on this rant that is more or less completely directed towards your manager! The answer to that is simple, when I go on my break, I stay at my computer as well, it’s a source of internet connection and entertainment, yea sure, if you need help I will take a break from my break and continue it later to help you out, but when I’m on my break, I am supposedly allowed to surf the net. So you can understand my surprise when I hear from my supervisor that they had to remove my access (which I never had instated, I just used my buddies, as I never asked for internet use as I was using his from day one) to the Internet. What happened was, I was playing a robot game, that when you kill a certain amount of people you earn information about a newer Intel product, and I thought it was pretty neat, and Hitler came up from behind and asked me to check for duplicates in a list while she sat there and talked to her hubby on the phone and was unable to do this menial task, so of course I say I will, and she walks away, me knowing she saw, but confused at why she walked away without saying a word. These are some great people skills if you ask me, to top it off; she had told my supervisor that she had told me to get off, which I had not. After that, my supervisor walked by as I continued my break and said that I had already been told once, this is the second time, turn it off. So you can see my real confusion and anger start to build at this great set of communication skills we have around here.

To wrap up my rant as my day is ending in a few minutes so I can go home and surf all I like free of being afraid of Hitler being over my shoulder, I will say that this company has a load of talent and knowledge that is going unused, and the people in the positions that need that talent and knowledge, are people that are severely under trained, and just have no proper mind on who a IT crew should and does work. I do not see it getting any better here, so as this is my first, I doubt it will be my last writing about the absolutely obscene situation I see here, and I will extrapolate into the business world and other company’s as I assume, I am no the only one in this world with this problem. Keep on trucking;
